Patchogue set a Long Island soccer League record this season by winning both the major division championship and the Jospe Cup tournament for the third consecutive year. Patchogue’s record should stand for many years said league President John McKim of Glen Cove. McKim was reelected President by acclamation. Other officers elected for next season are Karl Weber 1st Vice President, George Dunn 2nd Vice President, Patrick Ryder 3rd Vice President, Finn Carlstedt treasurer, Henry Mayors corresponding secretary, Gil Beanland recording secretary, Antonio Camara scheduling secretary, Ronald Campell registrar, Olaf Thiede arbitration chairman, and John Bollands delegate to the state association.
Reprint from the LI Journal Star.
Note: No team won the McKim Cup 3 times in a row since 1964, there were 7 back to back champions Lindenhurst Sport Club 1968, 1969, Jamaica Bays 1971, 1972, Forest Park 1975, 1976, Levittown 1981, 1982, Glen Cove 1988, 1989, NY Irish Rovers 1995, 1996, Glen Cove 1997, 1998, and NY Irish Rovers 2001, 2002, McKim was right this record will stand for a long time.
LISFL John McKim Cup (1st Division)
|
John McKim became President of the LISFL in 1960. He realized that the future of the League was dependent upon a strong junior program, and he worked towards this end. In December of 1963, the first official junior game was played. Today they’re (thousands of kids playing) in Long Island Junior Soccer League. The first division major challenge cup was named the McKim trophy in honor of John’s work. The Theodore Jospe Memorial Challenge Trophy (since 1934) was retired by Patchogue SC in 1964 and Lindenhurst SC retired the Baxter Trophy (since 1964) in 1967. Thus the LISFL initiated a new challenge trophy for the first division and in 1968 named it in honor of John McKim. The original trophy, a silver bowl has since disappeared, and now a yearly McKim trophy is supplied by the LISFL. Now behind every name is a story or a person. With the McKim trophy it was John L. McKim of Glen Cove NY. Our records show many years and much volunteer administrative service in soccer. Delegate at large to the NY State Soccer Football Association. 1934-37

Fred Edwards Cup Champions 3rd Division LISFL
|
Fred Edwards became President of the LISFL in 1950. Through leadership and with the help of Karl Weber, the league grew from one Division to three Divisions. When he stepped down in 1960, he left the League with the conviction that, if soccer was to grow, all teams must take the name of a town on Long Island as its formal designation. This Policy is still applied today. In honor of Fred Edwards’ work the third Division Cup was named the Edwards Cup.

Patrick (Pat) Ryder
Born Dublin Ireland March 15th 1924 Died, Long Island NY October 14th 1976
After many years playing soccer in his native Dublin, Pat and his lovely wife Vera, emigrated to New York, in May 1955, settling on Long Island. After a short spell playing for the Baldwin SC (1962-1963). Pat and some of his Irish friends started the Rocklyn SC (East Rockaway-Lynbrook) in 1964. Soon after, he became a member of the LISFL board. He was elected president in 1966. No one to let grass grow under his feet, Pat contacted Jack Maher, and soon after, they, co-founded the Long Island Junior SL. Quite an accomplishment foe a man, who died so young at the age of 52.
The above article was supplied by John A. Kennedy who played with Pat Ryder in Rocklyn SC from 1964-1974.
Pat Ryder was always interested in soccer. But above all he was interested in providing the opportunity for young men to grow into responsible adults through participation in a healthy sporting recreational program. As Pat liked soccer, it was only natural that he expends his efforts on behalf of young men, into the administration and operation of a soccer league. Pat Ryder became president of the LISFL in 1966, succeeding Art Lesberg. Pat was convinced that the future of Long Island soccer would depend upon a strong junior program. To the end Pat did everything in his power to encourage the growth of junior soccer. The strength of today’s LIJSL owes much to the foresight of Pat Ryder and the many soccer enthusiasts he encouraged to work with him on this worthy task. Pat Ryder was a prime mover in the development of the entire soccer program on Long Island, during the ten years he was the president of the LISFL, and the sport enjoyed an unparalleled growth both in the junior and senior movements. Pat was a leader and an active participant in all soccer activities. His untimely death on October 14th 1976 it was a great loss.
To honor the work of Pat Ryder, the LISFL dedicated this memorial indoor tournament, though the annual competition young and old men will meet in friendly rivalry as they strive to win the Pat Ryder indoor Trophy.
