The New York Cosmos today announced details of Breast Cancer Awareness Night on Oct. 12, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society. During the Cosmos-Railhawks matchup at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium, the American Cancer Society will be the Charity of the Match and hold several fundraising efforts on-site.

Fans will have an opportunity to win a team-signed jersey or a pair of 2014 season tickets by making a donation to the charity. Additionally, fans at the match will receive pink Cosmos scarves.

At halftime of the match, both the American Cancer Society and the Cosmos will recognize and honor breast cancer survivors who have battled the disease and triumphed.

“We wanted to partner with the American Cancer Society to support them with events such as Breast Cancer Awareness Night,” Cosmos Chief Operating Officer Erik Stover said. “I’m hopeful that with the support of our fans, we can help them raise some necessary funds and help create added awareness for the important initiatives they host.”

As the first official charity partner of the rebooted New York Cosmos, the American Cancer Society receives a variety of support from the club. During every match they play, Cosmos players wear a blue and pink ribbon on their jersey sleeves to help promote health awareness for both men and women. During the Cosmos’ offseason, players, coaches and staff, will all make trips to the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge Jerome L. Greene Family Center New York City to visit with cancer patients and their caregivers.

About the American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers saving lives and fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. As the largest voluntary health organization, the Society’s efforts have contributed to a 20 percent decline in cancer death rates in the U.S. since 1991, and a 50 percent drop in smoking rates. Thanks in part to our progress nearly 14 million Americans who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will celebrate more birthdays this year. As we mark our 100th birthday in 2013, we’re determined to finish the fight against cancer. We’re finding cures as the nation’s  largest private, not-for-profit investor in cancer research, ensuring people facing cancer have the help they need and continuing the fight for access to quality health care, lifesaving screenings, clean air, and more.
