Big weekend ahead for 3 of our U23 teams in USASARegion1 Regional Tournament

Region I Finals this Weekend

Three Finals & U23 Tournament for Region Championships

Region1
(15 June) Once again Region I will host its finals of the Amateur, Werner Fricker & Gerhard Mengel Cups along with the Men's Under-23 Tournament at the Ukrainian American Sport Center. It takes place on 17 & 18 June in Horsham, Pennsylvania. Lansdowne Bhoys of Eastern New York will try to accomplish a Region double but in their path will be Christos FC of Maryland who are looking for their own double and Junior Lone Star of Eastern Pennsylvania. Danbury United of Connecticut completes the field among the three finals.

It starts Saturday morning with the Men's Under-23 Cup with 12 teams competing in group play. Later that evening will be our first final, the Amateur Cup. On Sunday, we conclude the 2017 cup season for the Region.

The winner of the Amateur Cup will play in the national finals to be played on 4 & 5 August among one of the four regional finalists. The national championship for the Werner Fricker and Gerhard Mengel Cups will be played 18 & 19 August at the Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac, Michigan.

US Amateur Cup

The first final features this year's powerhouses of Eastern New York against that of Eastern Pennsylvania. Both teams took their Amateur & Open titles of their respective states and Lansdowne Bhoys made it through both finals for the Region. The Bhoys shutout Southie FC of Massachusetts and then the Bricks Lions FC of New Jersey while scoring 10 goals. The path for Junior Lone Star was first against AFC Select of Metro-DC Virginia and then the Rochester River Dogz Reserves of Western New York in the semifinals.

The final kicks off at 7:00 on Saturday night, 17 June. These two are the last among eight state champions from a group of 57 teams that battled for this cup.

Werner Fricker Cup

Last summer, Christos FC of Maryland not only took the Region double but also the national double winning the Werner Fricker Cup and the Amateur Cup. Christos missed out on the Amateur Cup losing to River Dogz in the quarterfinals. Lansdowne were edged by Christos in last year's Amateur final and look to return the favor with the Werner Fricker Cup in their attempt at the Region double. A tight title match is expected between these two state giants.

Christos got here defeating Junior Lone Star in extra time and then defeating Clarence Coyotes of Western New York with only 9 players. Lansdowne went to Massachusetts to eliminate the Kendall Wanderers FC and then took a 2:1 victory over FC Motown of New Jersey in the semifinals.

On Sunday afternoon, 1:00, these two face each other for the Region's open title. It started out with 32 teams to come about to the eight state association champions for the honor to lift the trophy named after the former President of US Soccer, Werner Fricker, following the US Soccer tradition that dates back to 1913.

Gerhard Mengel Cup

Christos made it a Maryland treble for the second season in a row and look for their own Region double with the Gerhard Mengel Cup, the Over-30 Championship. It took extra time to remove last year's national champion, Phoenix SC of Eastern Pennsylvania. Then it was southern foes United SC of Metro-DC Virginia to get to the final. Danbury United of Connecticut made it through the northern bracket after beating Kel Kau of Massachusetts and then advancing on penalties against the NY Greek American after a 1:1 draw.

This final will be played Sunday morning at 11:00. From a field of 16 teams among seven state associations these two will fight for the Gerhard Mengel Cup.

Region Men's Under-23 Cup

We have 12 sides taking part in the Region's U-23 tournament. Four groups will decide on Saturday who advances to the semifinals on Sunday, 18 June. Teams from the Long Island Football Soccer League, the Eastern Development Program, the Garden State League and Eastern Pennsylvania will compete for the Region title.
