9/18/16 - New York Polet won the 2016 Rapaglia Cup in dramatic fashion by defeating Cedar Stars Academy 3-2 in the tournament final. Polet opened the scoring with a goal by Misin Shala to take an early 1-0 lead. Cedar Stars battled back and created several good scoring chances throughout the first half. Polet defended well and created several good scoring chances of their own, but the score remained 1-0 at half time.
Polet continued to defend their lead and went ahead 2-0 with about 15 minutes left on a goal by defender Abraham Bartoah after some nice combination play with forwards Raphael Abreu and Jonathan Okafur. Cedar Stars quickly attacked and finally breached a strong Polet defense led by Bartoah, center back Teddy Niziolek, and goalkeeper Jesse Corke to make the score 2-1.
Both teams were nearing the end of their third game of the day and with nearly a 180 minutes of soccer having been played, the tired legs were starting to show. Polet went ahead 3-1 on a goal by Jonathan Okafur. Within a few seconds, Cedar Stars stormed down the field and scored to make the score 3-2. Shortly after that goal, the referee blew the final whistle and Polet were able to begin celebrating a historic win for the club and the Long Island Soccer Football League (LISFL).
With the win, Polet became the first team from the LISFL to win the tournament, which began in 2008. Earlier in the day, Polet defeated Halcones FC (ALLFUT champions) 4-0 and Manhattan Kickers (Flamhaft Cup winners) 2-1 to qualify for the final.
Cedar Stars had qualified for the tournament as the defending Manning Cup champions. Earlier in in the day, they had defeated Westchester CF (Eastern District Soccer League champions) 3-0, and qualified for the final after holding Lansdowne Bhoys (Cosmopolitan Soccer League champions) to a 0-0 draw. Cedar Stars had the better goal difference because Lansdowne could only manage a 1-0 win over Westchester CF.
LISFL President Gus Xikis hailed New York Polet's win as "a terrific achievement by a terrific club." Xikis said, "I want to congratulate David Rosini, Claudio Kolega, Zvonimir Antolos, the players, and everyone involved with New York Polet Soccer Club. Once again, they showed why they are terrific representatives of our league. They brought a very talented team to the tournament and demonstrated why the LISFL is such a strong, competitive league."
Division 1
Elsewhere on Sunday, Forest Park defeated New York Serbia 2-0 on goals by Kevin Davies and Gonzalo Carignano. Stephen Polimeni scored twice and David Yepes added a goal as Forest Park won the Reserve game 3-2.
Port Jefferson SC won at home 2-1 over East Hampton FC. Dennis Bocanegra scored both goals for Port Jefferson, while Ernesto Valverde scored for East Hampton. In the Reserve game, East Hampton won 3-1 on 2 goals from Eddy Juarez and 1 from George Alvarado. Juan Pallares scored for Port Jefferson.
New York Irish Rovers came away with a 1-0 win over Port Jefferson Fusion on a goal by Gabriel Sima. The Reserve game ended 1-1 with Tim Berdon scoring for the Fusion and Eric Melendez scoring for Rovers.
Glen Cove came away from their games with Kew Forest with two big wins. Talismainc forward Tyler De La Torre scored twice to give Glen Cove a 2-0 win in the first team game. Dylan Moser, Steve Grella, Brian Hernandez, Ernesto Montecer, and Chigozie Ahunanya each scored a goal to give Glen Cove a 5-0 win in the Reserve game.
Division 2
In midweek action, the firemen of the FDNY who play as College Point Flames got off to a hot start with a 5-1 win over College Point FSC. Last season's leading scorer in Division 2 Tom Garafola had a hat trick, while Matt Meagher and Greg Baum also scored for the Flames. Mike Richards had the goal for College Point FSC.
The Flames continued the hot start with a 4-3 win over Farmingville Portuguese on Sunday. Tom Garafola scored twice, Alejandro Monsalve scored once and Farmingville scored an own goal. Fabio Alves, Julian Barreiros, and Vinny Hammel each scored a goal for Farmingville.
Floral Park continued their own hot start to the season with a 4-0 win over Oyster Bay Park. Julian Munera led the way with 2 goals, while Craig Sherrer and David Lopez each scored for Floral Park.
Olympiacos NY bounced back from their opening day loss with a 4-1 over SS Cosma Damiano. Kevin Londono, Stamatis Amvrosiatos, Burak Batmaz, and Kostas Mendrinos each scored a goal for Olympiacos, while Matthew Kane had the goal for Cosma Damiano.
South Jamaica Portuguese exploded for a 9-3 win over Leros. Bruno Martins scored 4 goals, Miguel Almeida had a hat trick, and Brian Fontes scored twice for South Jamaica. Julian Escobar had 2 goals and Alex Reminick scored one goal for Leros.
College Point FSC bounced back to get a point from a 2-2 tie with New York West Indies United. Matt Pratt and Steve Orfanos scored the goals for College Point, while Figaro Sadou scored twice for West Indies.
Oceanside United made it 2 wins in 2 games with a 1-0 win over Mineola Portuguese on a goal by John Zator.
Division 3
Port Jefferson Fusion and South Jamaica Portuguese battled to a 2-2 tie. Lucas Castano and Daniel Lazo each scored for the Fusion, while Brendan Vagos scored both goals for South Jamaica.
Aggelis Panagiotis scored twice and Rapos Ilias added a goal as Asteras GCC defeated NYCD Boldest Soccer FC 3-2. Steven Bailey scored 2 goals for the second week in a row for NYCD.
Kosmos United CY continued their strong start to life in the LISFL with a 6-1 win over Hicksville American SC. Allah Morad Rashid and Alexis Santa each scored 2 goals for Kosmos, while Yiannis Troullouris and Karl Cesar Germain each scored a goal. John Dembinski scored for Hicksville.
Over-30 Division
Glen Cove and Istria battled to a 2-2 draw. Devin Hodges scored twice for Glen Cove, while Silvio Zucchelli scored twice for Istria.
Garden City Centennials defeated Long Island Gaels VSP 1-0 for their first win of the season on a goal by Ed Vincent.
Integral Kings travelled to Polonez and came away with a 3-2 win. Saidy Fedee, Dason Noble, and Naketa Solomans scored the goals for Integral Kings. Jaworski Arkadiusz and Adam Piechota were the goalscorers for Polonez.
Robert Meehan had a hat trick and Michael Hobbs added a goal for Lindenhurst, but it still wasn't enough as they lost 5-4 to New York Hota Bavarians. Maceo Wilson led the way with a hat trick, while Cem Dumankaya and Lucas Prochotsky added goals for Hota.
Baisley United were on fire too as they came away with a 8-1 win over Oceanside United. Ryan Reid had a hat trick, Jeff Hinds and Donovan Bernard both had 2 goals and Anthony Curtis added 1 for Baisley. David Santos had the lone goal for Oceanside.
Over-40 Division
Elvis Klapija scored twice to give Olympiacos NY a 2-0 lead, but a Flavio Ferri hat trick ultimately gave Lindenhurst a 3-2 win.
Marek Rakowski had a hat trick and Marcin Dziewulski added a goal to give Polonia a 4-1 win over Oceanside United. Yaron Goren scored for Oceanside.
New York Hota Bavarians and Baisley United battled to a 2-2 draw. Oscar Estrada and Cheiek Tidiani scored the goals for Hota, while O'Neil Johnson and Anthony McCreath scored for Baisley.
Oyster Bay Park came away with a 2-0 road win over Baldwin. Victor Escobar and Juan Carlos Sarmiento scored the goals for Oyster Bay.
Over-50 Division
Sinisa Vujasinovic scored twice for New York Polet / Rudar, but New York Hota Bavarians could not be stopped as they came away with a 10-2 win.
A goal by Ian Singh was all Baisley United needed as they defeated Polonia 1-0. Olympiacos NY won 1-0 over Oceanside United on a goal by Anestis Apostolidis.
